Holiday Decorations are Going Up in Downtown Ocean City

They have done the entrance to the City on 9th Street with lighted garland and wreaths. Work continues on Asbury Ave. It is going to be so amazing.

Quest to Collect a Million Pennies Will Benefit Storm Relief

It started with a couple of questions in Mikenzie Helphenstine's sixth-grade math class at Ocean City Intermediate School:

• "Have you ever wondered what 1 million of anything looks like?"
• "How long would it take to collect?"
• "How could you store it?"

It turned into a challenge: to see if the class could collect 1 million pennies and donate the proceeds to local charities. And when Hurricane Sandy struck, the charitable part of the project took on new meaning.

Charities that will benefit from the class project now include:

• Ocean City Ecumenical Council Food Cupboard
• Ocean City Education Foundation
• Long Beach Island School District

Each of the recipient charities needs resources in the aftermath of a storm that left record flooding throughout the region.

The city spent the day yesterday building dunes

We are hoping for nothing more then a little minor flooding

 Even though Ocean City had very little structural damage we did have a lot of flooding. Most of this damage was not evident until shop and home owners started to return to the Island and check their properties. Many favorite restaurants like Yannis, Arlenes, and Piccini. Retail stores, Sea of Oats, The Cricket Box, Wards, Hoys, Hallmark, and many more are closed. PNC, Wells Fargo and TD are a few of the banks that remain closed as well.

Debris is piled up all over town. Peoples lives are on the curbs. It is so sad to see all this.

Starting at about 40th Street you start seeing mounds of sand on the sides of the road. 

The Longport Bridge is closed. The Somers Point-Longport Causeway suffered severe damage and one lane of the road is gone. To get to Atlantic City you can go out the 9th Street Bridge, go down Bay and turn right at the end as if you were coming back into OC. This will bypass the part of the road that is gone.

On a final note.... Clean up continues here at the building. Dave is doing a great job connecting with the right people to get it done.

After 18 hours the back lot is clear of sand. Just a few final touches here and there. The sand has been placed on the side of  Third Street and Corinthian Ave. for City pick-up.

Work continues through the night on the back lot. Thank you to the residents on the Bay side of the Building. It is loud and they have large lights set up. Thank you Paulette Harnett for letting me use your apartment for pictures.

They are making great progress. 

The City is having us put the sand on the street. At this
point they have to take each load around the corner looking
for empty space to put it

Work has started on clearing the sand from the back parking lot. They are bringing lights from Philadelphia and plan to work through the night.

You really get an idea of the depth here. Steve and John
measured 47 inches.

This morning the water is mostly gone

I thought it was interesting how the sand is layered.  It
shows each wave that came in.
